Homemade Butter Dinner Rolls

I like to divide this recipe in half and use half of the dough to make sticky buns and the other half for dinner rolls.

  • Yield: 24 rolls 1x
  • Category: Baking

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 teaspoons active dry yeast (or 2 packets)
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 6 cups flour (divided use)
  • 1 cup butter, softened (divided use)

Instructions

  1. In a stand mixer bowl combine the yeast, sugar and water.
  2. Let stand until foamy.
  3. Mix in the egg and salt.
  4. Mix in 5 cups of flour. The dough should be soft and sticky.
  5. Mix in ½ cup (1 stick of butter).
  6. Add approximately 1 cup of additional flour until the cough becomes stiff and comes off the sides of the bowl. Knead in the mixer for 5 minutes.
  7. Transfer the dough to a greased bowl and let rise until it has doubled in bulk (approximately 1 hour).
  8. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out until it is approximately 1 inch thick.
  9. Cut the dough into 24 pieces, pinching the corners together to form balls.
  10. Dip each ball in butter and place in a greased baking dish.
  11. Let rise until the rolls have doubled in bulk.
  12. Bake in a 400 degree F oven until they are golden brown.
  13. Serve warm or let cool on a wire rack and freeze.
