Homemade Butter Rolls
I like to divide this recipe in half and use half of the dough to make sticky buns and the other half for dinner rolls.
- Prep Time: 2 hours 30 minutes
- Cook Time: 30 minutes
- Total Time: 3 hours
- Yield: 24 rolls 1x
- Category: Baking
Ingredients
- 4 teaspoons active dry yeast (or 2 packets)
- ½ cup sugar
- 2 cups warm water
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 6 cups flour (divided use)
- 1 cup butter, softened (divided use)
Instructions
- In a stand mixer bowl combine the yeast, sugar and water.
- Let stand until foamy.
- Mix in the egg and salt.
- Mix in 5 cups of flour. The dough should be soft and sticky.
- Mix in ½ cup (1 stick of butter).
- Add approximately 1 cup of additional flour until the cough becomes stiff and comes off the sides of the bowl. Knead in the mixer for 5 minutes.
- Transfer the dough to a greased bowl and let rise until it has doubled in bulk (approximately 1 hour).
- On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out until it is approximately 1 inch thick.
- Cut the dough into 24 pieces, pinching the corners together to form balls.
- Dip each ball in butter and place in a greased baking dish.
- Let rise until the rolls have doubled in bulk.
- Bake in a 400 degree F oven until they are golden brown.
- Serve warm or let cool on a wire rack and freeze.
